PROFILE

Sam 'Dunk' Mackinnon is the most athletic player in the NBL. He has been the most exciting player as well since he joined the South East Melbourne Magic from the North Melbourne Giants junior program the arrows. Mackinnon only got serious about Basketball in his last few years of High School, an avid Rugby League player Mackinnon had chosen League as his sport. But he was too good at Basketball to ignore. As soon as he joined the Magic he made an impact. His 1994 stats were 5.5ppg, 2.9rpg and 2.4apg. He shot a very high percentage from the floor (59%) and he rounded off the year by beating freind and Australian junior team mate Aaron Trahair for the rookie of the year award. Mackinnon has an explosive 85cm, (35 inch) verticle leap, that coupled with his blinding speed gives him the psyical advantage over almost everyone in the league. Mackinnon is also an outstanding defensive player and he has racked up over 2 steals per game in his short NBL career. He has stepped up as a leader for the Magic and this quality saw him take the captains job for the 22 and under World Champion Australian that won the Gold Medal in Melbourne mid 1997. Aaron Trahair was the previous captain for the junior team that won the silver medal in Greece 1995. Mackinnon has already won an NBL championship and competed in two NBL Finals series. He is considering delaring himself eligible for the 1998 NBA Draft. This would seriously hurt the Magic but will ensure that Mackinnon's bright future will be fullfilled.
